Curriculum – Detailed Programme Structure

The B.Des Communication Design programme follows a Common Core + Specialisation Track structure.
All students undergo a shared foundation in design during the first year, after which they choose a specialisation in UI/UX Design or Visual Communication from Semester 3 onwards.

Specialisation: UI/UX Design

The programme is organised into six semesters, advancing from fundamental concepts to specialised training and projects oriented toward industry applications.

Semester 1–2: Design Foundations

Students begin their journey by developing a strong foundation in design thinking, visual language, and communication principles. Through drawing, visualization, material exploration, and studio-based learning, they understand form, composition, typography, and visual hierarchy. Courses in photography, communication theory, and the history of UI/UX—especially in the Indian context—help students recognize how design influences user behaviour, culture, and digital experiences.

Semester 3–4: Core UI & UX Skills

As students progress, they are introduced to essential UI and UX concepts such as interface design fundamentals, semiotics, typography, and user-centric design approaches. They learn UX research methods, user journey mapping, interaction design, and microinteractions while working with digital tools and motion UI principles. Studio projects focus on translating research insights into intuitive, visually engaging digital interfaces.

Semester 5–6: Advanced UI/UX & Product Design

At this stage, students work on complex digital systems and product design workflows. Learning includes grid systems, responsive design, branding for digital platforms, UX analytics, A/B testing, UX writing, and content strategy. Specialized modules expose students to mobile app design, web interface systems, gaming UI, and interactive experiences using industry-standard tools such as Figma.

Semester 7–8: Professional Practice & Capstone

In the final phase, students focus on real-world application and career readiness. They conduct usability testing, refine designs through feedback loops, and work on advanced studio projects. The programme culminates in a capstone project involving a complete UX prototype, testing, and professional portfolio development, supported by an industry internship that prepares students for careers in UI/UX, product design, and interaction design.

Specialisation: Visual Communication

Semester 1–2: Visual Language & Design Basics

Students build a strong foundation in visual communication through drawing, design studios, and material exploration. Courses in photography, communication theory, design history, and Indian visual culture help develop visual sensitivity, conceptual thinking, and an understanding of how images communicate meaning across cultures and media.

Semester 3–4: Media, Typography & Storytelling

The curriculum advances into media technologies, typography, semiotics, and visual storytelling. Students gain hands-on experience in video production, print design, photography genres, and cinematography concepts. Studio projects emphasize narrative building, concept development, and effective visual communication across print and screen-based media.

Semester 5–6: Applied Visual Communication

Students explore advertising design, branding and identity design, digital image processing, lighting techniques, video editing, motion graphics, podcast production, and documentary filmmaking. This phase strengthens technical proficiency while encouraging creative problem-solving and professional execution across visual and digital platforms.

Semester 7–8: Industry Practice & Portfolio Development

In the final year, students work on advanced post-production techniques, commercial photography, UI/UX integration, and short film production. The programme concludes with a capstone project, portfolio development, and an industry internship, enabling students to showcase their creative identity and transition confidently into professional roles in media, design, and visual communication.
