About

CILS is a research centre dedicated to advancing the understanding and practice of environmental law, promoting sustainable development, preventing climate change and protecting the natural environment. The centre demonstrates a commitment to advancing research that examines the complex intersections of environmental law with the multifarious issues affecting the world today. The Centre was initially established as the Centre for Development of Energy and Environmental Policies (CDEEP) in the year 2017. However, since this specialised research centre belongs to the School of Law, its name has recently been rechristened as the Centre for Studies in Environmental Law or CSEL. Recently, in March 2025, the centre has initiated its annual flagship conference with the debut theme on “Conceptualising Legal Framework and Policies on Coastal Zones of India”.

The CSEL had organised its first national level conference on “Conceptualising Legal Framework and Policies on Coastal Zones of India” on the 28th and 29th March 2025. The conference brought to the fore the scholarly efforts in the form of wholesome and productive research papers from students, scholars, practitioners and advocacy organisations from across the country. It included contributions from scholars and academicians from various state and central universities, apart from a few institutions of national importance.
