The thing I admire the most about NCU is the support that I've received from everyone at the college. I like the friendly atmosphere here and the fact that the teachers are really close to the students. We are very supported, not only in our studies but also in extracurricular activities. Program Highlights

M.Tech. in Civil engineering programme imparts advanced knowledge in the selected disciplines of civil engineering. The students are prepared for bright career in industries, research and academic institutions within India and abroad.

It is 2-year full-time and 3-year part-time regular program leading to the master's degree in civil  engineering, with an option of getting specialization in the following fields as per choice of the student:

  • Structural engineering
  • Construction engineering and Management
  • Environmental engineering and management
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Water Resource Engineering

The research  laboratories are set up with a major objective to be a state-of-the-art resource centre in the validation and value addition of traditional knowledge and practices pertaining to civil engineering. Further they are designed in such a way that not only the students can have hands on experience to understand basic and applied concepts but they can also undertake basic

and applied research in different branches of civil engineering. The tests in laboratories are performed as per relevant I.S. codes and all these laboratories can be used for offering consultancy services also. Total area of the laboratories is 6500 sq.ft. for optimum utilization of space and time.Along with teaching the faculty are engaged in carrying out R&D projects sponsored by govt. and private agencies and published their research findings in reputed international and national journal and conferences.

The  R&D Projects are Concerned with current issues of India and the world, the broad areas of the department have been identified as :Reuse of waste materials in civil engineering construction ,Water resources management adaptable to current climate change, and Energy management to control adverse climate change in future   

Some of salient features of the program

  • The student enrolled for this program after completion of the program will get M Tech in Civil Engineering.
  • The student enrolled for this program will have an option to get M Tech in Civil Engineering along with a certificate of specialization in any one area mentioned above as per his/her choice
  • To get M Tech with specialization in any one of the streams mentioned above the student will have to take all the electives in third semester of the program from any one of the stream as per his/her choice, and he/she will have to do Major Project in the same area.
  • If the student wants to pursue M Tech in Civil Engineering (without specialization) then he/she is free to take electives from any offered stream mentioned above, and there will not be any constraint regarding area of Major Project.
  • In case a student has previously taken any course similar to the core/elective courses offered in this program, upon the approval of suitable competent authority, he may be allowed to take other courses as replacement.

Activities

  • Industrial Visit - RMC Plant, Manesar

    An industrial visit was planned for 3rd Semester B.Tech Civil Engineering and 1st Semester M.Tech Civil Engineering students by Ms. Megha Kalra and Mr. Akx Malik. The trip was organized on 24th October, 2016 to a Ready Mix Plant (RMC) Plant of UltraTech Cement in Manesar, Gurgaon. It is the second oldest RMC plant of UltraTech in India which caters to the need of builders in gurgaon. This plant produces 60 m3 of concrete per hour and have also manufactured concrete of  M90 grade.

    It was the first industrial exposure for 3rd Semester B.Tech students and proved to be a good learning experience for all. The students have been aware of how concrete is made and what are the compositions and ingredients used while making concrete, but this trip gave them a practical knowledge and on-site feel of the materials, how different types of concretes are produced depending on the demand, and students also got to know about the importance and works of a civil engineer on the field.

    The students had a lengthy and detailed discussion with the Safety and Quality Engineer of RMC Plant. He explained them about the difference between RMC concrete and other concrete, and process involved in making of different types of concrete. Students got to see the different grades of raw material that are used in making concrete. They learnt how materials are stored, selected, transported, mixed and various test that are done before the Ready Mix Concrete is transported to site for work. They learnt about the internal control system which automatically controls the mix design and the proportions of the ingredients to manufacture different types of concrete. The students learnt the importance of use of flyash, and various admixtures to alter the properties of concrete. The figures below highlight the various observations from the visit.

  • Visit to NH-9 (Highway Widening site from KM 170 to KM 227)

    An industrial visit was organized by the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering on 23rd September 2016 to visit a highway widening/ 4-6 laning of NH9 from KM 170 to KM 220 from the national capital. Students from M.Tech (Structures) along with faculty member Mr. Lokesh Choudhary got hands on the live construction of various road sections, Vehicular Under passes etc. The site extended from Hisar to Fatehabad districts of Haryana with a total stretch of 57 KM. The students got to see and learn the process involved in the design of Vehicular Underpasses, flexible and rigid sections of flyover, road markings. The students had a great exposure to the equipment used for laying and construction of highways such as tandem axle rollers, Kerb and parapet casting machine, CC road section laying machine and its automatic dowel bar insertion accessory, Texturing machine. Not only this, the students also learned construction of Reinforced Earth Sections using Geogrids which are constructed in the ascend and descend of underpasses. The visit ended with visit to the concrete batching plant where Pavement Quality Concrete was being batched and mixed.

     

  • IBCC Bridge Design Competition IIT Bombay

    The students of the Mtech Structural Engineering 1st year participated in the IBCC Bridge Design Competition whose 1st round was held at NCU on 07-10-2015. Further the team qualified to the final round held at IIT Bombay and represented the University on 1.04.2016

    The NCU team qualified the semi finals from among total of 40 teams from different colleges from all over India and obtained the 7th position in the All India final round at IIT Bombay out of a total of 250 teams which reached the final round.

    The department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is extremely proud of the team.
