Specialization in Structural Engineering involves advanced study of the course’s components such as Structural Mechanics, Finite Element Analysis, Structural Dynamics, Structural Reliability and Optimization, Reinforced and Pre-Stressed Concrete, Steel Structures, Design for Wind and Earthquake, Tall Buildings and Towers, Computer Applications In Structural Engineering etc. Structural engineers are concerned with the conception, analysis, design and construction of components or assemblies to resist loads arising from internal and external forces. Solid mechanics is the study of the distribution of stresses that a given load produces when applied to a solid element and the calculation of the resulting strains, given the characteristics of the materials that make up that element. Application of Solid Mechanics that enables the Structural Engineer to assemble elements such as beams and columns into a structure that will resist both static and dynamic loads such as gravity, wind, snow and earthquakes.

Learning Outcomes of this Track:

  • Students will have a holistic approach emphasizingon structural engineering & building on the commonality of engineering structures at the levels of materials, mechanics, analysis and design.
  • Students will be able to consistently and successfully apply fundamental Structural Engineering principleswithin their chosen engineering application area and use appropriate tools to solve problems in structural engineering.
  • Design and evaluate structural components and systems to meet the desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, constructability and sustainability.
  • In addition to steel and concrete, a know-how of new materials that are being developed and used in Structural Engineering including reinforced plastics and polymers.
  • Rehabilitation of existing structures weakened by corrosion.
