Instrumentation and Measurement
Measurement and Instrumentation using electronic techniques are serving as backbone to any engineering industries engaged in Production, Research and Design, Service and Maintenance or in other related activities. With the advancement made in the field of electronics technology, the earlier form of instrumentation and control namely, hydraulic, pneumatic combined with electrical have been gradually replaced by modern electronic instrumentation technology. This has resulted in the widespread use of electronics systems in the field of measurement, instrumentation and control in the modern industries as also in the R & D lab.
To be able to appreciate the operation of these complex instrumentation systems, it is essential to know the very fundamentals and characteristics of various hardware’s, devices and circuits that form an integral part in designing an instrumentation systems. Keeping this in view, Measurement and Instrumentation Laboratory has been set up to cater to the requirements of students in advancing their skill and knowledge in these areas.
The use of basic electrical measuring instruments like AC/DC analog ammeter and voltmeters, analog multimeters and also the digital instruments like digital millimeters, form the part of experiments.Power and Energy measurements using watt meters and energy meters have also been introduced to give a general concept of measuring these quantities by various methods.The measurements of load, pressure and strain using semi-conductor strain gauge, peizo-resistive Sensor is worth mentioning. The measurement of temperature is done with sensor like thermocouple and thermistor and platinum resistance thermometer. Displacements are measured with Linear Variable Differential Transformer transducers. Displacements are further measured inductive transducers. Use of capacitive transducer is made for the measurement of linear displacement. Angular speed measurement is done with the use of Hall effect transducer and its principle of working is explained thoroughly.
National Instruments-LabVIEW software based experiments have also been added to enhance the logical skills of the students. This is a system design and development platform for all kinds of measurements.
