Special Lecture on Challenges in Criminal Investigation: The Role of Law Enforcement Agencies in India organized on February 27, 2017
The investigating agencies play a crucial role in the administration of criminal justice, and the same has become more challenging with the use of more sophisticated technology in the commission of crimes. An improper investigation may defeat the very purpose of justice.
With an objective of emphasizing on the practical aspects of investigation process as well as the lacunae involved in it, the NCU Law School organized a special lecture on ‘Challenges in Criminal Investigation: The Role of Law Enforcement Agencies in India’ by former ACP, Delhi Police, Mr. Ramesh Chander on February 27, 2017. During his interaction with the students, Mr. Chander explained the procedure of registration of criminal cases in the police station followed by investigation of the same which included spot inspection, examination of witnesses, medical examination of accused, co-ordination with forensic laboratories, prosecutors etc. He emphasized on the fact that different investigation techniques are to be applied for different cases and challenges also vary from cases to cases.
Mr. Chander expressed that the defense counsel has a crucial role to play and encouraged the students to take this profession with dedication, sincerity and honesty. Having served as a senior officer in Police for long years, Mr. Chander shared his experiences including the challenges encountered during his service. He also referred to some of the landmark cases where he was a part of the investigating team, such as Mayapuri radiation case, attack in Navy Chief’s residence and Nirbhaya Gang Rape case. It was a great learning experience for the students to have known the challenges involed in the investigation of the cases. A vote of thanks was extended at the conclusion of the lecture.
