Introduction
We are one of the most reputed Universities in Haryana with Ph.D Programme. Academic research is a vital component of any university. Keeping this in mind, NCU pursues its Doctor of Philosophy Programme with vigor and seriousness that it deserves. With a Central Research Facility and many specialized laboratories, this research Programme is established very well in NCU with the latest research topics. This is also supported by lot of publications in web of Science, Scopus and other reputed unpaid journals. At present, fifty PhD scholars have been awarded their doctoral degrees and other 119 students are pursuing PhD in Engineering, School of Law, School of Management and English. Ph.D Program is offered in both full time and part time mode.
This is governed by the Rules and Regulations of the Doctor of Philosophy Programme.

Admission

The admission into the Doctor of Philosophy Programme is done twice in a year, i.e., in November- December and in June-July by holding an admission test followed by personal interview. NET/GATE/JRF/SLET qualified students are exempt from admission test. PhD is offered in school of Engineering and Technology (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Math, and English), School of Management (SOM) for PhD in Management, and School of Law (SOL). Preference is given to outstanding students, who have qualified for the Doctor of Philosophy Program through any National Level Test like CSIR-UGC NET or GATE.
A candidate can apply online or offline. For applying offline the candidate can download the application form from the website of NCU or can obtain it from the University campus up to the last date for submission of forms specified in the Admission Notice.

Fellowships & Contingency

University Fellow position is only meant for full time Ph.D. scholars, who wish to carry out doctoral research at NCU. Concurrent applications for admissions to the Ph.D. Programme as well as award of University Fellowship can be made.
Full-time PhD students with brilliant academic record can be awarded University Fellowships of Rs.25,000/- per month. Besides this, each full time doctoral student is given a contingency grant of Rs.25,000/- per year on reimbursement basis.

Programme Outcomes (POs)

  1. Demonstrate a coherent and systematic knowledge in the field of English Literature
    showing an understanding of current theoretical and literary developments.
  2. Critically analyze literary texts and identify connections with past and present scenarios.
  3. Develop ability to look at and evaluate literary texts as part of the wider network of local
    and global culture.
  4. Display an ability to read and understand various literary genres and stylistic variations and
    write critically.
  5. Demonstrate basic skills in literary communication and explication of literary practices and
    processes.
  6. Understand the importance of the coexistence of different cultural perspectives and be
    tolerant of varied views.
  7. Develop effective communication skills required for expressing critical ideas in speech and
    writing.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to think rationally and present one’s views critically as a
    responsible global citizen through the reading of World Literatures.
  9. Understand human values and professional ethics and fulfill social responsibility.
  10. Recognise the need for and develop the ability to engage in independent and life-long
    learning.
  11. Develop coordination between knowledge, character building, analytical reasoning, and
    make meaningful choices in career.

Programme Specific Outcomes

PSO 1: Understand the fundamental concepts of English Literature and develop the ability to think logically and critically analyze texts, arguments, and knowledge to be used in their respective professions which is useful in today’s interdependent world.

PSO 2: Demonstrate the understanding of literary heritage through social-cultural values, mythologies, and their religious and mystical significance.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

A candidate seeking admission to the PhD Programme under School of Engineering and Technology (SOET) of NCU must have obtained:

1- M Tech (Engineering) degree with minimum 60 % marks in aggregate or equivalent (with NCU, NPET).

2- Science/Humanities, M.Sc. (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)/MA (English, Mathematics) degree with minimum 60% in aggregate or Equivalent, with NET/GATE/JRF/SLET qualified for financial assistance by the government (NCU,NPET exempted) or 67.5% with (NCU,NPET).

3- B. Tech. degree from a Premier university or institution (IIT/NIT) and the institution within 100 NIRF ranking for the year of consideration with CGPA 8.5 or equivalent (with NCU,NPET) and GATE/UGC/CSIR score for government financial assistant (NCU,NPET exempted).

 

The minimum eligibility criteria indicated above for each Programme is only an enabling clause. The concerned Doctoral Research Committee (DRC) may fix higher criteria at the time of short-listing keeping in view the number of candidates, number of seats and minimum academic / professional background expected to cope with the Programme etc.

Candidates in the final year of their Master’s Programme, who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration for the first semester of their Ph.D. Programme at NCU can apply for admission. For short-listing purposes, their performance till the preceding semester (or preceding year, if in case their Programme is year based) would be considered, but the admission would be subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In such cases, a letter from HoD of their current institution, certifying candidate’s Master’s Thesis submission is required at the time of Ph.D. admission. However, if the student fails in the qualifying examination or fails to produce the degree/provisional certificate/mark sheet within 3 months of the commencement of the 1st semester, his/her admission and registration to the Ph.D. Programme will be automatically cancelled with no refund of the semester fees.

Candidates who do not have valid score in national tests like GATE, UGC-NET and SLET will have to appear in Entrance Test named ‘NCU Ph. D. Entrance Test’ (NPET) and will have the following weightage of various components for admission: NPET marks 50% , Qualifying degree marks – 30%, and Interview –20%. Candidates who have valid score in the above National tests shall be exempted from NPET. The entrance test NPET will be of two hours duration and will be an Objective type test. Entrance Test ‘NPET’ will be held from 10:00 AM to 12 noon on the date specified by the University. For broad syllabus refer Ph.D. Brochure 2020-21. The NPET will be conducted centrally by Controller of Examination (COE) at NCU Campus. Room No. for NPET will be informed through University website / e-mail. After the NPET written test, interview will be conducted (by respective Departments/Schools) on the same day at NCU 1:00 PM onwards. Rooms for interviews will be announced at the appropriate time.

Selection of the Research Fellows shall be done from amongst scholars who have qualified for admission, by the Fellowships Selection Committee.
In case of candidates from partnering institutions/industries, applications may be considered by the VC/BDR throughout the year, subject to the scrutiny for eligibility upon request by partnering institute.

Programme Fee

Annual fee is Rs.85,000/- Semester-wise fee to be paid in two equal semester wise installments of Rs.42,500/- each at the beginning of each semester.
